This policy explains the purpose of probation and what probationary period each member of staff will have, depending on what category of staff they fall under.

All new employees have a period of probation. Probation is used to set goals for your development in the job to which you have been appointed and identifies what extra support or training you might need.

Your period of probation will be determined by the category of staff you are:

6 month probation for:

  • Clerical, operational and technical staff.

1 year probation for:

  • Professional and managerial and teaching only staff.

2 year probation for:

  • Academic and research staff.

5 year probation for:

  • University research fellows/academic fellows.
