Redeployment for employees

We are committed to helping to maintain the security of employment. If you are at risk of losing your job, the Redeployment service will work with you to try and help you find another job at the University.

University of Leeds jobs are advertised to redeployees for two weeks on the Redeployment job site before any other advertising is placed.

Redeployment takes a flexible approach to recruitment so hiring managers, where appropriate, will look to train and develop redeployees into a role.

HR and the Redeployment service will support you and give you help and guidance when you write your skills profile and supporting statement. We can also arrange mock interviews for you and provide you with useful feedback to help you in your job search.

  • Once your eligibility has been established you will need to complete a skills profile to join the service.
  • Your details are put on to the Redeployment register and you are given access to the Redeployment portal.
  • You can then submit applications for jobs you think you are suitable for.
  • The hiring manager will see if you are suitable for the role.
  • Redeployment will give you feedback for unsuccessful applications and interviews.

How redeployment works for redeployees

The Redeployment service can help you to try and find a new job at the University if your job is at risk although to be eligible to join you must have at least 12 months' service by the end of your current contract.

Jobs are advertised to redeployees on a preferential basis through the e-recruitment system for 14 days before they are advertised anywhere else.

You can only apply for jobs on redeployment if they are the same grade or a lower grade than your current job.

Your job is at risk if:

  • external funding is ending;
  • organisational change means your job isn’t needed anymore;
  • medical reasons mean that you aren’t able to carry on doing your current job (supported by Occupational Health);
  • there is another substantial reason.

The redeployment process

The redeployment process can be longer or shorter depending on the situation but broadly speaking will be as follows:  

  1. Contact your local HR Manager to discuss your eligibility.
  2. Complete a skills profile form.
  3. Your details and skills profile are added to the Redeployment register for managers to view anonymously when they have a job to fill.
  4. You are given access to the e-recruitment system so you can search for jobs.
  5. Apply for jobs you think you are suited to.
  6. The hiring manager will read your application and decide if you are a potential match to the job.
  7. If you are a potential match you will usually be invited to an interview.

How to write a skills profile

You will need to write a skills profile to join the Redeployment register. It essentially summarises your skills, knowledge and experience. Managers will use this to see if you are a potential match to their job so make sure it highlights your strengths and transferable skills.

You need to fill in every non-shaded section of the skills profile. Your HR Manager can help you fill it in and check it for you, and will fill in the shaded sections.

  • Skills profile: outline your current role. Think about: What are you responsible for? Who do you work with? What planning do you do? What decisions do you make?
  • Previous roles: outline any previous roles and skills gained from them.
  • Any other information: any information that illustrates skills that haven’t yet been mentioned.

Your HR Contact will then complete your redeployment web summary. This is an overview of your skills and experience and will be the first thing managers read about you on the Redeployment register so it is important that the summary is accurate and that it sells you.

You will need to do a first draft of your skills profile and then your HR Contact will help you to edit it if needed.

Example of a redeployment web summary

I am currently working as a senior manager and have over 10 years’ experience at the University of Leeds and almost 20 in the Higher Education sector. I have excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to build strong and productive relationships and networks both internally and externally. I enjoy communicating with a wide variety of people and have experience of writing clear, concise and persuasive documentation for a variety of purposes and audiences.

My experience includes:

  • Staff management
  • Managing recruitment processes including assessing role requirements, writing job descriptions, interviewing and selection
  • Induction, probation and appraisal
  • Disciplinary and sickness management
  • Writing and delivering staff training sessions
  • Management of change, staff support and development
  • Budget management and cost control

Applying for jobs

When you have access to the Redeployment jobs site you will need to look for jobs that you think you might be suited to. You can also set up job alerts so you get an email every time a job that might be suitable is advertised on Redeployment.

The Redeployment portal guide (link below) will help you to login, search and apply for jobs, set up job alerts and change your password.

When you apply for a job you will need to upload your skills profile and a supporting statement. You don’t have to submit a CV but they are recommended for academic and senior professional and managerial jobs.

You should tailor the statement to the job by describing how your knowledge, skills, and experience demonstrate the criteria in the person specification.

It may be helpful to use the criteria as headings in your statement and write a paragraph or two to describe how you meet each one, using examples where you can.

Remember that this is your chance to tell the hiring manager how well you meet the specification and to sell yourself. Make sure you proof read your statement and think about asking someone else to check it.

The hiring manager will go through your statement to see if you meet at least 70% of the essential criteria. If there is a potential match Redeployment will be in touch to arrange an interview. If you aren’t a match Redeployment will be in touch to give you feedback.

Interviews

If the hiring manager thinks you are at least a 70% match for the job, they will normally invite you to an interview.

You may be in competition with other redeployees so make sure you are fully prepared.

If you would like to update your interview skills Redeployment can arrange mock interviews with the LOGIK Centre. You will then get feedback on how the mock interview went.

Redeployment will let you know the outcome of your interview.

New appointment

If the manager decides you are a match to the job (or the most suitable match if other redeployees have applied) they will offer you the job.

If you accept the job you will need to agree a start date with your current manager and your new manager. You will then be sent your new contract letter.

You will probably have a three month trial period in your new job. During this time objectives will be set and you will have regular meetings to discuss your progress, training requirements, development and how your are settling into the new job and department.
